soffit-vents

Adding soffit vents introduces cool, fresh air to your attic as hot air escapes from the top of the attic through ridge vents, attic fans or gable vents. This project is easy to handle yourself and will help bring down the cooling costs for your home.

  1. Measure the area where you want to install the vents and determine how many will be needed along each section.
  2. Cut a piece of wood slightly smaller than the size of the vent you're installing and use that as a template to mark the cut lines for each location. It should be an inch shorter and an inch narrower than the actual vent.
  3. Cut the hole using a circular or saber saw. Check to make sure that nothing is blocking the hole, and remove any insulation that might be covering it from within the attic.
  4. Center each soffit vent over the hole and parallel to the eaves with the vent louvers facing in toward the house before you screw each vent to the soffit board.
  5. Paint the vent to match the soffit.

Adding soffit vents introduces cool, fresh air to your attic as hot air escapes from the top of the attic through ridge vents, attic fans or gable vents. This project is easy to handle yourself and will help bring down the cooling costs for your home.

Measure the area where you want to install the vents and determine how many will be needed along each section. Cut a piece of wood slightly smaller than the size of the vent you're installing and use that as a template to mark the cut lines for each location. It should be an inch shorter and an inch narrower than the actual vent. Cut the hole using a circular or saber saw. Check to make sure that nothing is blocking the hole, and remove any insulation that might be covering it from within the attic. Center each soffit vent over the hole and parallel to the eaves with the vent louvers facing in toward the house before you screw each vent to the soffit board. Once you paint the vent to match the soffit, no one will notice it's there, except you and your utility bill.
